    Charles Worthington
Officially named the ‘House of Charles Worthington', the Great Queen Street salon (there are four others) has kept the original Georgian townhouse layout, with small rooms over five floors, making for an intimate, unintimidating experience. Good, solid cutting is from £45 for men. The flagship Percy Street salon (020 7631 1370) also has a vastly loyal clientele and is a favourite among Time Out staff.
    Charles Worthington, 28 Great Queen St, WC2 (020 7831 5303/ www.cwlondon.com). Covent Garden tube.

    Cuts
The legendary Soho salon, smothered with stickers, flyers, and locals who like to hang out on its beaten-up leather sofa, is best for guys who need a quick, skillful restyle without the frills (you bend over forwards to wash your hair). A gents’ wet cut with scissors is £32.50, or £28.50 if you let your stylist loose with clippers, too.
    Cuts, 39 Frith Street, W1 (020 7734 2171). Leicester Square tube.

    ESHK
Owners Meg Liu and Fernando Lopez are veterans of the London Fashion Week hair circuit, and pride themselves on being at the forefront of trends with their directional and individually tailored cuts and colour. Their cosy Clerkenwell salon is decked out in an eclectic blend of antique and vintage furniture and all staff have more than ten years of experience – a fact that’s not reflected in its reasonable prices. Mens’ cut and finish from £26, ladies from £40, colour from £45, and extensions are available with price on request.
    ESHK, 156 Goswell Rd, EC1 (020 7253 9592/www.eshk-hair.com). Old St tube/rail or Barbican tube.

    Gentlemen’s Tonic
Bloody Mary in hand (Gentleman’s Tonic’s trademark tipple), suited execs are shorn in pleasant stone-tiled booths housing barbers’ chairs and plasma screens. A haircut and finish (with head massage) is £42: reasonable when you take into account the level of professionalism and members’ club-like surrounds. Add a wet shave and pay £64, or book a whole head of highlights for £100. With beard trimming and express facials on the menu, a more intense therapy – from Reiki to a back wax – can be administered in treatment rooms downstairs.
    Gentlemen’s Tonic, 31a Bruton Place, W1 (020 7297 4343/ www.gentlemenstonic.com). Green Park tube.

    Hair and Jerome
Located between Liverpool Street and Spitalfields, Jerome Hillion’s salon is as noteworthy for its eclectic interior – think Victoriana mixed with retro kitsch – as its haircuts. Although a unisex salon, it's popular with city boys.
    Hair and Jerome, 5 Artillery Passage, E1 (020 7375 0044/ www.hairandjermone.co.uk) Liverpool St tube/rail.

    The Lounge Soho
This ten-year-old salon has built a reputation for being friendly, creative and with reasonable prices appealing to everyone from Berwick Street market stall-holders to trendy media types. The complimentary beers, coffee, videogames, and wi-fi make it stand out from the sea of Soho salons. Prices from £40 for a cut and blow-dry for men, and from £50 for women.
    The Lounge Soho, 26 Peter St, W1 (020 7437 3877/ www.theloungesoho.com). Piccadilly Circus tube.

    Murdock London
Remarkably good value with just a couple of hairdressers who get very booked-up in advance, this place prides itself on offering quality haircuts without rushing. You can also get a wet shave.
    Murdock London, 340 Old Street, EC1 (020 7729 2288/www.murdocklondon) Old St tube/rail.

    Sharps
Don’t be fooled by Sharps’ bright, contemporary interior – its barber service is traditional through and through. Offering a dry cut for £21, a wash, cut and style for £26, and a tough-guy head-shave for £24, the Sharps Shave (£31) includes a ‘Face Lube, Oil & Filter’ with three hot towels. Sharps' own range of grooming products is available alongside manly things like Grenson brogues, a rather fancy-looking Japanese scooter and cold Amstel beer to chug in front of the plasma TVs.
Sharps Barber and Shop, 13A Charlotte Street, W1 (020 7636 8688/ www.sharpsbarbers.com). Goodge St tube.

    Wacky Barber
Awful name, awesome service: you don’t need an appointment and staff are super-friendly and offer beers. Providing great haircuts and a good soundtrack, it’s one of the best value places in the West End. Men’s haircuts from £26.
    Wacky Barber, 9-12 St Anne’s Court, W1 (020 7494 3101) Oxford Circus tube.

Thanks timeout for this useful article. l went to ESHK hairdresser yesterday, l love it! they are very cool, excellent music taste, offered chocolates and drinks..
l stayed about an hour and half for my colour done and i noticed all of their clients have a very nice hair, not over trendy.
Pricewise was reasonable, not more than i expected. only one thing was a bit odd.. they dont take tips....
i will go back for sure

I went to brookes and brookes yesterday and i wanted to be blonde from mousey hair with faded highlights. I had Kerry and was fortunate to get in after a cancellation. I absolutely love my colour, after being told it wouldn't lighten properly at other salons and achieveing orange results, i had been disappointed but with a full head of highlights my hair's really blonde now and i love it! Kerry made it look natural and the whole service was lovely. I felt really relaxed and the salon isn't at all pretentious considering it's reputation. I'll definitely go back, was the best hairdressing experience and colour i've ever had...and i've had a lot!

Does anyone know a good hairdresser for blonde highlights?
I have mousy dark blond hair and I tried a couple of hairdressers but it often ended up looking either orange or white-green (sometimes even both). I used to have loveley blond highlights in the past but the colourist moved away.
    Can anyone recommend someone?

I went to Brooks and Brooks on 1.11.08, and Sally Brooks cut my hair, (95:00)
Sally is friendly, down to earth and unpretentious. She's also at the top of her game and is instantly on your hair wavelength - you know, all the things that bother you about your hair she sees and addresses.
Sally is clearly hands-on with her salon, and I guess if any of the staff isn't up to the mark they don't get to stay around very long. Some very nice hairsyles were leaving the salon, anyway. The receptionist is absolutely charming and the hair wash with gorgeous head massage was A+.
I was more than pleased with my hair and will definitely go back. The visit was everything you hope a visit to the hairdresser will be, and rarely is!

Hi, I really want to get hair extensions. I've seen quotes for around GBP 200 for real hair, protein fusion bonding. Is this any good? Will it damage the hair? Is there a salon in London which can do this well and cheaply too? I want to get them done asap. Thanks.

I want to give them ago but good recs. re who to see would be welcome. They don't have a website.
Seems only the guys at Timeout have used them?

After reading a comment here i went to Ruby Blue in Newington Green and had the best haircut of my life! not only my boyfriend loved it, he's also decided to get his next haircut there. if you want a new look from a professional but a caring/patient hairstylist i strongly recommend Ruby Blue.
